Smoking is bad for your health.
Alright, so you've probably been told this over and over again by your friends and family who want you to quit smoking--so what's the point in going over it again? Because apparently it needs to be pounded into your head. Smoking is the leading cause of numerous health issues, including a myriad of cancers and emphysema. Would you rather give up smoking or shave ten or twenty years from your life expectancy? It seems like a simple choice.
Being addicted to nicotine, is just a small part of quitting, the addiction to the habit is a lot worse, and many people just can't manage to get rid of the cigarettes, just for that reason alone. Through the years as a smoker, you have gotten in to a lot of different habits, habits that almost by automation has lead to smoking. Breaking the patterns from years of smoking, is one of your biggest challenges in quitting smoking.
To quit smoking you have to make up your mind that you are never going to touch a cigarette , now some people i have noticed what they do is they will smoke 10 cigarettes in a day while trying to quit smoking citing the reason that its their last one, its really humorous or ironical in the sense that they want to leave it but they fall heads down to the temptation.
Pills, Hypnosis & The Laser
These methods are different. They are all intended so that you can lower your cravings and therefore you don't need to use willpower. The immediate quit success rates are very high - around 90%. But remember the problem of the smoker who quits and actually resists the cravings? They are still susceptible to starting again a few months or years down the road.
And that's the problem with these particular methods. They cut the cravings temporarily but they don't cure you of your addiction. You are still an addict and will be for the rest of your life.
There is really only one way to quit and never, ever smoke again and that is called CBT. Cognitive behavioural therapy is used to help people with irrational fears. For instance, they might believe that flying is too dangerous, even though it is one of the safest modes of transport.
This therapy also works for smokers. Ask yourself, when you see a heroin junkie, do you believe that he is 100% ration and using logic when it comes to his addiction? I sure don't. Well, the same is happening to you. I know this because I've been there myself and, after I had CBT, I was able to see my addiction for what it really was.
In the long term, the success rates of CBT are way over 80%. And I would hazard a guess that the unsuccessful 20% were simply too stubborn. Too bad for them, I say. Is their stubbornness and their inflated ego really worth those average 15 less years of their life due to smoking? I think not.
